The state of health care in this country has lead to more
people turning to more natural ways of taking care of their health. They are seeking to improve their health,
overcome a health challenge, and/or prevent catastrophic illnesses such as
diabetes and heart disease. One of the
modalities that people are seeking to use is Acupuncture. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One in ten Americans currently receive acupuncture for pain,
digestive disorders, fertility and other health challenges. The World Health Organization (WHO) and
National Institute of Health (NIH) have recognized over 40 specific conditions
that can be treated effectively with acupuncture. A few of these conditions are addiction,
anxiety, carpal tunnel syndrome, trigeminal neuralgia, and digestive issues
such as Irritable Bowel Syndrome and Chron’s Disease. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="text-align: center;">If you are someone that is new to this ancient medical
healing modality then you may not be sure of how to go about finding a
qualified acupuncturist in your area.
There are three very important questions to ask of the </span><span style="text-align: center;">person that you
are thinking about using for your health care services. </span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
In order to become an acupuncturist
you must complete a graduate degree at an accredited college. The Council of Colleges of Acupuncture and
Oriental Medicine (CCAOM) is the national organization recognized by the U.S.
Department of Education to accredit Acupuncture and <st1:placename w:st="on">Oriental</st1:placename>

There are over 50 colleges in the <st1:place w:st="on">United States</st1:place>. To learn more about the CCAOM or to check on
a college please go to <a href="http://ccaom.org./">ccaom.org.</a> </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
Most programs are a minimum of four
years and consist of studies in both western and eastern medicine. When an acupuncturist graduates from one of
these colleges they are awarded either a Masters Degree in Acupuncture or a
Masters Degree in Oriental Medicine. The
degree is based on whether they studied only acupuncture or if oriental
medicine was also included. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<ol start="2" style="margin-top: 0in;" type="1">
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>Are You Licensed by the State to
Perform Acupuncture<o:p></o:p></b></li>
</ol>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
In order to perform acupuncture
over 98% of states require that an acupuncturist be certified by the National
Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). NCCAOM is the only national organization that
validates entry-level competency in the practice of Acupuncture and Oriental
Medicine (AOM). NCCAOM administers a
board exam in which a candidate must receive a passing score in order to be
certified. In addition a candidate must
continue a minimum of 60 hours of continuing education every 4 years in order
to maintain their certification. To
locate an acupuncturist in your area and for more information please visit
<a href="http://www.nccaom.org/">nccaom.org. </a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
In addition some states such as <st1:state w:st="on">California</st1:state> and <st1:state w:st="on">New
Jersey</st1:state> require that you also pass their own state
board exam in order to be certified. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
Upon completion of NCCAOM and/or
State certification an applicant must then apply for and be issued a license by
the State for which they will be practicing.
This is usually the State Board of Health. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<ol start="3" style="margin-top: 0in;" type="1">
<li class="MsoNormal"><b>What is your title?<o:p></o:p></b></li>
</ol>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .25in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
This is perhaps the most important
question you will need to ask. Depending
on the state the title may vary. Common
titles used are Licensed Acupuncturist, Certified Acupuncturist, Acupuncture
Physician, or Doctor of Oriental Medicine.
If the practitioner you are seeking services with holds any other title
then he or she may or may not be NCCAOM certified. In addition they may not be licensed by the
state as an acupuncturist. </div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
You might ask yourself, why is this
important. In many states physicians,
chiropractors, radiologists, and other health care practitioners may perform
acupuncture within the scope of their license.
However, many of them have not had any more training than a weekend
course in order to learn the diagnostic skills and techniques required to
perform acupuncture effectively. They also have not completed any board
examination to ensure they are competent in any skills or techniques they might
have learned in their weekend course. </div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">As we get older our joints may
stiffen and become prone to pain and injury. This wear and tear is seen in
Chinese medicine as a stagnation of the circulation of blood and energy through
the body, a lack of “moisture of the tendons”.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">
</span>Fortunately, there are a number of different ways to counteract these
problems. These include Chinese herbal remedies that promote circulation and
reduce chronic inflammation, nutritional supplementation and changing the
emphasis of our physical activity to be low impact on joints. When a particular
joint becomes consistently painful as a result of Osteoarthritis or from a
sports injury, acupuncture is a time-honored method of resolving pain and
restoring normal range of motion. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSA9E6jO4RHn84I24KqLjqJGEpHUXuBCc2haJ3E8qUzA4_y6qq_jUp7OhHeS7JX99IDoos2aVvtO-CXqBroxncENskbQrVlpHZiluE5Q2MiVfojimS_n_TFqvgGp9fDnLO421GP_OOV9w/s1600/acu3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="148" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhSA9E6jO4RHn84I24KqLjqJGEpHUXuBCc2haJ3E8qUzA4_y6qq_jUp7OhHeS7JX99IDoos2aVvtO-CXqBroxncENskbQrVlpHZiluE5Q2MiVfojimS_n_TFqvgGp9fDnLO421GP_OOV9w/s200/acu3.jpg" width="200" /></a><span style="color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">When I started practice over
ten years ago such claims would have would have caused a skeptical eyebrow to
be raised within the medical community. Thanks to a number of studies,
acupuncture for these kinds of conditions has entered the medical mainstream.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">There
are two more notable facts emerging from research. The first is that there have
been studies using acupuncture for pain control in patients who were awaiting replacement
of the hip and knee, who in spite of the advanced state of the disease received
significant pain relief which in some cases alleviated the need for surgery and
in more cases delayed the need for surgery which, given the lifespan of a
replaced joint, can be a very important consideration. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">And the
second fact: acupuncturists have always recommended regular follow up visits in
order to maintain or improve upon the progress made. This advice was confirmed
by a study on chronic osteoarthritis of the knee carried out at the University
of Maryland Medical School. In this study the group that had received acupuncture
for the initial two-month period were further divided into a group that
continued to have acupuncture one time per month for one year and a group that
had no further treatment for a year. The first group either maintained or
improved upon their initial gains in health whilst the non-treatment group
showed a worsening of their pain scores.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

If you're
concerned that your youthful appearance has fallen by the wayside, you may want
to consider a natural, non-surgical “refresher” – cosmetic acupuncture.</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">So what is
Cosmetic Acupuncture? The protocol I have been most impressed with is the Mei
Zen (beautiful person) Acupuncture System. After a series of 10 treatments
(twice a week for five weeks), skin becomes more delicate, fine lines begin to
fade, there is less sagginess and droopy eyelids, and there’s an overall
improvement of skin texture and tone. And, as an added benefit, patients report
an overall rejuvenation that is not confined to the face. Patients leave
sessions feeling more relaxed, focused and even report improved sleep and
overall energy levels throughout the day.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Chinese medicine
is so advanced in terms of “anti-aging” solutions.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>The underlying principles are about restoring
natural beauty from the inside out. This ancient approach has worked for
thousands of years, freeing up chi (energy) and improving circulation. When
performing any type of cosmetic acupuncture the needles in the face are
inserted at a shallower depth than in regular acupuncture.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This creates micro traumas in the body that
increase the production of collagen and elastin.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>This is the same process that happens when
you cut your finger and new skin starts to grow.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In addition , there are meridians (pathway of
energy) that run through the face and make connections to internal organs.
Stimulation of specific points along these meridians balances the body and
treats the underlying factors of aging process.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

small, yet intriguing study published in Acupuncture in Medicine found that
traditional Chinese acupuncture curbed the severity of hot flashes and other
menopausal symptoms. Fifty-three middle-aged, postmenopausal women were divided
into two groups; one received such treatments twice weekly for 10 weeks, while
the other experienced “sham” acupuncture with blunt needles that did not
penetrate the skin. In both groups, levels of estrogen and other hormones were
measured before the study began and before and after the last session.
Menopausal symptoms—hot flashes, vaginal dryness, urinary tract infections and
mood swings—were also measured before and after the treatments, using a
five-point menopause rating scale (MRS) in order to assess their severity.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif"; font-size: 11.0pt;">At the end of the study, the
women receiving Chinese acupuncture scored significantly lower on the MRS
scale, with hot flashes seeing the sharpest decrease. The researchers explain
that acupuncture boosts production of endorphins, which may stabilize the
temperature control system of the body. They say that more investigation is
needed because the study was small, but note that its results seem promising,
suggesting that traditional Chinese acupuncture could be an alternative for
women unable or unwilling to use hormone replacement therapy to relieve
menopausal symptoms.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

five-element acupuncture treatments during a six month period; the remainder

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Who among us doesn’t love
sweets? The sweet flavor releases serotonin in our brains, the chemical
responsible for our sense of well-being and contentment. But when it comes to
sweeteners, not all are created equal. There are side effects and health risks
from refined sweeteners like white table sugar and high-fructose corn syrup,
and from artificial sweeteners like NutraSweet, saccharin and Splenda. Since
refined sweeteners have been stripped of vitamins, minerals and fiber, they can
spike blood sugar, which can often lead to cravings and mood and energy
fluctuations. Instead, using naturally and minimally processed sweeteners can reduce
cravings for sugary things. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<span style="font-size: 10.0pt; line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri; mso-bidi-font-size: 11.0pt;">Here are a few natural
sweeteners to substitute in drinks, food and baking. Since they are all
approximately 1.5 times sweeter than refined sugar, you can use less. You can
find them in most supermarkets or natural food stores. When replacing sugar
with liquid sweeteners in a recipe, reduce the amounts of other liquids.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

seems to love honey, one of the oldest natural sweeteners on the market. Honey
will have a different flavor depending on the plant source. Some are very dark
and intensely flavored. Wherever possible, choose raw honey, as it is unrefined
and contains small amounts of enzymes, minerals and vitamins.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Also choose local honey as it can aid in
reducing and eliminating seasonal allergies.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;">

<span style="color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Autumn is the season to nourish
and detoxify the lungs and large intestine. Your lungs are
your first line of defense against unhealthy air. When you’re relaxed, you
breathe in oxygen approximately fifteen times per minute.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>In order for your lungs to be able to
eliminate carbon dioxide, it’s essential that your lungs are functioning
properly.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>When your lungs aren’t
functioning properly, your body accumulates heat, which can perpetuate all
sorts of health issues, including allergies, frequent colds, neck pain, reduced
immunity, sinusitis, excessive perspiration- even melancholy.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="background: white; color: black; mso-bidi-font-family: Calibri;">Equally important to your health this time of year is the
large intestine. <span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";"> </span></span>It is divided into three
parts: <span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";"> </span></span>The
caecum, where your appendix is attached; colons—ascending, transverse,
descending and sigmoid; and the rectum. <span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";"> </span></span>When the large
intestine is constipated you may experience skin rashes, acne, dry skin and
eczema. <span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";"> </span></span>When
constipated, waste creates a toxic state that shows up as bloating, gas,
headaches and irritability. <span class="apple-converted-space"><span style="font-family: "Calibri","sans-serif";"> Autumn is a particularly good
time of year to focus on caring for your large intestine.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span></span></span>Pay attention to your diet and
eliminate foods that are rich in sugar, flour, dairy products, alcohol, and
caffeine – all of these can aggravate your gut and large intestine.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span>Instead, build your meals around foods to support
the health and function of both your lung and large intestines.<span style="mso-spacerun: yes;"> </span><o:p></o:p></span></div>

Sure, our bodies are equipped to regularly detox and eliminate toxins, but I believe there’s considerable value in refueling and replenishing our bodies with a nutritional cleanse that will best support our ability to do this efficiently. But deciding how often you should do a detox should be based on your individual choice and lifestyle. It should also be based on what your health goals are and whether you do a “mini detox” at various other times throughout the year. </span></b></div>
<div style="background-color: transparent;">

A short detox tends to include activities like juicing, water fasting, or the popular master cleanse. A short detox usually occurs once a week, once a month, or once every couple of months. Some also choose a more structured program if they’ve recently undergone a major change to their body or are trying to heal or reverse a medical condition. </span></b></div>

It doesn’t matter what length of time or how often you decide to do a detoxification program; you are still reaping great benefits from doing so. The bottom line is to simply listen to your body and remember to get the expertise and support to guide you along the way. </span></b></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">Are you one of the many who suffer from a common condition known as adrenal fatigue? The adrenals are endocrine glands the size of walnuts which
are located on top of the kidneys. The outer layers are known to create more
than 30 hormones or hormone-like substances which are integrated into virtually
every function of the body. The inner
part of the adrenal gland is an extension of nerve tissue providing quick jolts
of energy to help us handle “emergencies.”
Unfortunately, our busy lifestyle seems like one emergency after another
to our adrenal glands, so they end up getting exhausted and overworked. And
without healthy adrenal glands we suffer. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Think of your adrenals as if they were muscles. </b>Muscles
contract when a need arises and relax when the need passes. Constant stressful
stimulation of the adrenals ultimately leads to adrenal exhaustion. Try holding
even a small hand weight straight out from your body – it won’t take long
before your arm will fatigue. Similarly,
the adrenals will respond to stress and fatigue if not given an opportunity to
“relax”, rand restore function. In this way, constant stress leads to the loss
of normal adrenal function. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial; font-size: 13.5pt;">Do you have this insatiable urge to always be "doing"? A drive to be busy and to stay busy? You may know where this drive came from. Or, it may be just the way you have always been.</span></div>

<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial; font-size: medium;"><span style="font-size: 13.5pt;">Two ten year-old best girlfriends are lying on the floor, in front of the fan on a hot summer's day reading. One of the girl's mothers runs into the room yelling to get outside and help weed the garden. The little girl's 10 year-old brain interprets mom's request as a criticism that she is lazy and unproductive.</span></span></div>

<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">There are books you read, and then there are books that can change your life. When it comes to finding books that will help you make changes to the way you eat, one of the key "ingredients" to being successful with your new effort, is to build a collection of recipes that you enjoy making, eating and sharing. This is especially true if you wanted to start integrating more live and raw foods into your diet. </span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;"><b>In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM),
there is a healing methodology related to the seasons and the Five Elements: Wood,
Fire, Earth, Metal, and Water. </b></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;">Summer is
ruled by the Fire element and is associated with the heart, small intestine and
tongue. It is also a period of maximum
activity or greatest yang, which means that there’s increased heat, extroversion,
and moving outward in nature and in our lives. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif; line-height: 115%;"><b>According to TCM, the Heart houses
the Shen, which is the mind, memory, consciousness, and spirit</b>. While these activities are attributed to the
brain in Western medicine, we tend to intuitively know that the Heart is also
an organ of feeling or spirituality. In
fact much of our language refers to the heart as an organ of feeling. Phrases such as someone “knowing things in
your heart” or having a “broken heart” are speaking to an emotional organ
rather than simply a muscle that pumps blood.
Of course, the heart does move blood throughout your entire body, but in
TCM that function is secondary to its job of housing the Shen. So, your heart can be said to impact your physical
health, mind and spiritual growth and awareness. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Acupuncture is also effective in alleviating pain, promoting healing and
decreasing inflammation, swelling, and spasms. Because of its broad range of
applications, acupuncture can be used during any of the phases of injury. Acupuncture
focuses not only on treating the injury but also on treating the underlying
conditions that may make someone more susceptible to injuries.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">The immune system normally
protects the body from infections and disease.
But when an autoimmune disease develops, the immune system mistakenly
attacks and destroys its own tissues and organs. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Autoimmune diseases predominantly
affect women, frequently during their childbearing years. These diseases often
tend to be hereditary, and certain environmental factors may also contribute to
a weakened immune system. There are natural
anti-inflammatory remedies that offer an alternative to conventional treatments.
Not only can they soothe the over-active
and misguided immune system, but natural anti-inflammatories often also help to
restore the body’s self-healing abilities.
Consider adding the following into your diet to support immune function
and reduce inflammation:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">1. Bioflavinoids, a class
of plant chemicals, has been found to greatly reduce inflammation and improve
autoimmune disorder- related symptoms.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">2. Flavenoids, catechins,
and theaflavins found in both green and black tea are beneficial to autoimmune
disease.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">3. Apples contain the
flavanoid quercetin that can decrease inflammation and reduce allergic
reactions and. Quercetin also occurs in berries, red grapes, red onions, and
black tea.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">4. Carotenoids, plant
pigments that include beta-carotene, are naturally found in apricots, carrots,
butternut squash, and collard greens, pumpkin, sweet potato, spinach, and kale.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">5. Ginger-Studies have
shown that ginger reduces
inflammation and helps patients with rheumatoid arthritis.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">6. Omega-3: Omega-3
essential fatty acids counteract chemicals that cause inflammation. Natural
sources include salmon and flaxseed oil.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">7. Fiber: A healthy and

<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">One of the first things I
recommend to patients suffering from migraines, is to keep a migraine diary for
several months to help identify triggers.
Track what you eat, when you eat, exercise, stress levels, sleep, and
symptoms. Often, common food culprits
such as chocolate and food additives are triggering imbalances which then lead
to painful symptoms. Hormonal fluctuations,
weather, and stress are also common sources.
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>To correct imbalances,
acupuncture can be very effective</b>. </span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">One
of the largest studies looking at migraine prevention through acupuncture was
published in the March 2006 edition of <i style="mso-bidi-font-style: normal;">The
Lancet Neurology</i>. In this study, patients who had two to six migraine
headaches per month were randomly assigned to one of three groups: <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> •Traditional acupuncture. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">•Sham
(fake) acupuncture. In sham acupuncture, needles are inserted into areas of the
skin at which no traditional acupuncture points exist. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">•Preventive
migraine medications (beta blockers, calcium channel blockers, or seizure
medications). <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: 0.5in; mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Patients in the
acupuncture groups received 10 sessions of acupuncture treatment in 6 weeks.
Those who took medicines continued them throughout the length of the study. The
primary outcome was the difference in migraine days between 4 weeks before the
study and 23 to 26 weeks after the study began. <b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;">Forty-seven percent of participants in the traditional acupuncture
group </b>experienced a reduction of migraine days by 50 percent or more.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">In addition to acupuncture, there are
traditional chinese herbal remedies that may also help. It is important to work with a practitioner
such as Debi that is well versed in not only acupuncture, herbs, and nutrition
but she may also recommend certain testing to find the root cause of your
migraines. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7lKR5AoAa6s/T-Iu-2Bj5gI/AAAAAAAAAVQ/U7CFFschADw/s1600/istock_smallGREENS.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7lKR5AoAa6s/T-Iu-2Bj5gI/AAAAAAAAAVQ/U7CFFschADw/s320/istock_smallGREENS.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>When it's said that "variety is the spice of life," greens are no exception! </b></span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>Plants “allow” humans and animals to
eat ALL of their fruits, </b>but only PART of their leaves, because plants need to
have leaves for their own use - which is manufacturing chlorophyll. Yet, plants
depend on moving creatures for pollination, fertilizing the soil, and helping
eat the ripe fruit. For this reason, plants accumulate a lot of highly
nutritious elements in their leaves, but mix these nourishing ingredients with
either bitterness or very small amounts of alkaloids (poisons) - which is why
animals are forced to rotate their menu. They eat a small amount of one thing,
then move on to other plants. The body is only capable of detoxifying small
amounts of a great many things, but it is much more difficult for the human
system to get rid of a large amount of one type of poison. This is why it’s so
important for us to learn to rotate the greens in our diet.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
</div>
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>Simply eating “lots of salads” is not
truly benefiting you if you’re using the same greens over and over</b>. </span></div>
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">It's important to alternate our variety of
greens as much as possible. My hope is that our farmers will actually grow a
larger variety of green leafy vegetables to increase our green intake. Many of
the greens available in grocery stores are mostly bred from the dandelion and
mustard families. Despite their names and appearances, cultivated greens have
similar nutritional content. To truly meet our nutritional needs, it’s important we include greens from a number of totally different plant families
into our daily diets. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">So, the next time
you’re making a salad, consider adding a combination of 4 or 5 greens. Consider adding a few of these:</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Greens:</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">
Arugula (rocket), Asparagus, Beet greens (tops), Bok choy, Celery,
Chard, Collard greens, Escarole, Fresee lettuce, Goji leaves (wolfberry), Kale
(3 types), Mache, Mitsuna, Mustard greens, Lettuce (all types red and green),
Radicchio, Radish tops, Spinach, Romaine lettuce green and red leaf, Turnip
greens, Wheatgrass<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="mso-margin-bottom-alt: auto; mso-margin-top-alt: auto;">
<b style="mso-bidi-font-weight: normal;"><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Herbs:</span></b><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">
Basil, Cilantro, Lemon Balm, Mint, Parsley, Peppermint leaves, Spearmint</span><br />

<br /><span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Why? The abundance of fresh produce!
I know, but it takes so much time and effort to create the juices – why
not just eat more fresh produce? Because
it’s virtually impossible to benefit from the same amount of nutrients you gain
from drinking a delicious, tall glass of veggies. Think about it. Would you really eat the same amount of kale

<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>Is food intolerance the same as a food allergy?</b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-usiLiCCONSo/T-CezM7034I/AAAAAAAAAUg/qWYjTeCEDP8/s1600/foodsensitivites.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-usiLiCCONSo/T-CezM7034I/AAAAAAAAAUg/qWYjTeCEDP8/s1600/foodsensitivites.jpg" /></a><span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">A food
allergy is when the body mistakes an ingredient in food (usually a protein) as
harmful and creates antibodies to fight it. The allergy develops when the
antibodies are battling the “invading” food (protein). The severity of allergies may vary but they
always carry the risk of anaphylactic shock. For this reason, foods you are
allergic to must be avoided for life. The most common food allergies are
peanuts, tree nuts (such as walnuts, pecans and almonds), fish and shellfish,
soy and wheat. If you are an adult, you may have discovered the allergy by
accident and it most likely involved a visit to your local emergency room.</span><span style="font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"> <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">A food
intolerance often turns up later in life. People are frequently surprised to
discover they are lactose intolerant later in life. The truth is, you most likely had some form
of food intolerance when younger, but your body compensated for it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-864Nm7-svNo/T-Ce5h2H6xI/AAAAAAAAAUo/ST3Wb5OqMVU/s1600/foodallergyfoundationphoto.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-864Nm7-svNo/T-Ce5h2H6xI/AAAAAAAAAUo/ST3Wb5OqMVU/s1600/foodallergyfoundationphoto.jpg" /></a><span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>One of the
first symptoms of a food intolerance is your energy level. </b> </span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">How often do you feel tired during the day?
This one symptom alone could be a food intolerance reaction. Gas, diarrhea,
bloating and headaches can all be food intolerance reactions. And because
reactions can occur up to 48 hours after eating, you may not make the
connection. Instead, most seek relief from symptoms by using over-the-counter
medications.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>Due to the
pervasive low quality S.A.D (Standard American Diet) in our country, the
incidence of food intolerances is on the rise. </b></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Many digestive problems are never fully diagnosed, and food intolerance
can often be the cause. More than 15% of
Americans are now thought of to be gluten intolerant and an estimated 75% of
Americans are lactose intolerant. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in; mso-outline-level: 1;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>So how can you know for sure? </b><o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">It’s called
an elimination diet and more and more individuals are finding this to be a
critical step in solving health issues. Elimination diets are amazingly effective in
the case of food intolerance, which irritates your digestive system or when you
are unable to properly digest or break down food.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">It’s
important to note that food intolerance reactions tend to be activated when you
eat the same foods over and over - and triggered by stress to your digestive
system. Examples include a course of antibiotics to treat an infection, birth
of a child, moving, finding a new job, surgery and frequent low blood sugar
(i.e. letting several hours pass by without eating). These are all stresses
that can cause the digestive barrier to break down and expose your immune
system to commonly eaten proteins in foods.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">In the past,
we ate by season and did not have access to the same foods all year long, so
these reactions would go away. Today, we can eat the same foods all year long, meaning
we can develop reactions to the foods we eat most commonly and the reactions
won’t go away. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;">Put simply,
if you identify which foods your digestive system has difficulty tolerating,
you can avoid them for a period of time and the reaction will typically go
away. Unfortunately, most of us are unaware of food intolerance reactions
because they become so common. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal" style="line-height: normal; margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<span style="color: black; font-family: Arial, sans-serif;"><b>In my
practice, there is a particular test I use to pinpoints these reactions. </b>Once informed and assessed, we work together
to create a plan to eliminate these foods comfortably from your diet for a
